Yes Call Me Crazy – But This Is Only a Small Chunk of The Questions That Were Firing Through My Head in the First Few Weeks After Finding Out I Was Pregnant……
Don’t get me wrong, excitement and anticipation for the journey I was about to go on were right up there also. As a business owner who takes her craft very seriously and an avid health and fitness nut, it would be crazy if these questions didn’t go through my head right??
After finding a midwife (who is amazing – shout out to Paula at Haven Midwifery in Cloverdale!) and meeting with her to confirm the pregnancy and formulate a plan I felt much more ready to continue on my pregnancy journey. She laughed at me when one of my top questions was what I should be eating, at this point I was still feeling good and hadn’t experienced nausea or food aversions yet……
This is how our conversation went:
Me: “Ok so what would you recommend I eat? Don’t worry I eat SUPER healthy!”
Midwife: Chuckles…..then says: “Just survive your first trimester and we will talk nutrition in your second trimester”
Me: Confused look?? “Ok, but what do you mean by survive? I eat lot’s of lean protein, veggies, fruit, oatmeal and nothing processed or fast food etc..”
Midwife: Chuckles again ….. “Don’t worry try your best to eat healthy, but if you feel like you want pizza or MacDonald’s just go for it”
Husband: (oh yes he was there too lol) – “yes pizza! Bring it on!”
Me: Appalled…..”What? OMG I haven’t eaten MacDonald’s in like 10 years!” Looks at husband “don’t get your hopes up buddy!” lol
Well needless to say it was the following week after the above conversation that little bean took the reigns and all I wanted to eat was CARBS! Even just the thought of vegetables or anything that I normally eat that would be considered “clean foods” made me want to hurl! Don’t worry I still never ventured to MacDonald’s, but I did pay good old Red Robin quite a few visits and breakfast began to consist of sprouted grain toast with almond butter, honey, and sliced banana (I guess still pretty healthy, but not my usual oatmeal power bowl!) My husband always got a kick out of finding half a piece of bread in the bread bag because I had ripped off just half a piece to spread butter on. What? Sometimes you just don’t want to the whole piece, I was saving the rest of later! Lol
I still tried to keep up with my workouts, because believe it or not this is what actually made me feel better. I felt tired much more quickly, but still kept up with my strength training (lighter weights and slower than normal) and mainly my spin bike interval training for cardio. I always felt a million times better after a workout, so even on days I was feeling horrible I forced myself to just do any kind of movement and I always felt much better! Midwife gave me the full green light to continue doing what I have been doing as long as I listen to my body and stop if I feel anything that isn’t normal.
Check out some of the workouts I was still doing in my first trimester (All approved by my midwife!)
No one knew yet and come on I had a reputation to keep up! Lol jk
All in all I can’t really complain.
